Thinking Log

2021-12-28

kaleidospace Icon for my site and other representations of myself, but it should be ever-evolving to reflect my changing identity. It should feel fluid but meaningful and authentic. I want to incorporate my different word themes for each year too.

named after Kaleidoscope which are constantly changing depending on how your head moves and space, where the bounds and rules are constantly changing, to contrast against websites which are static representations of info on the internet.

Your room is never the same from day-to-day. It evolves as you change and experience life. Can your website feel the same way? Can it change as you go through life and reflect some part of that process?

Like a View-Master, where you always have a single image, but you’re able to cycle through images one at a time, what if the website acted like a temporary lens, an abstracted view of your current life. A shifting, blurry image of the very now essence of you?

meaningful symbols

Going to use this to make a logo ^9c31c1

Need an overall shape for it to make? and then pull out the most common color from each photo to embed as pixels that make up the full picture?

simple process

  1. dimension reduction into top eigenvalue or mean or single pixel?

choosing shape or symbol

  1. needs to be able to evolve year-to-year but maintain an overall feel
    1. what is the primary feel or basis?
    2. what are the vectors for it to evolve or change over time?
      • can change every year and have a single symbol that represents my intention or theme for the year.
  • maybe it’s a self-portrait of me holding something and the thing i’m holding changes every year? Or the things from the past year become orbs/permanent artifacts that are smaller in the background? and the current one takes precedence?
    • doing over thinking: hand covering a brain?
    • gambling: coin flipping

  • can i use photo-a-day but not sure how to keep it automatically updating given the limitations of accessing apple data from the cloud. Ideally it would be a different experience each time you refreshed but maybe it can just use historical data (like the data of the past week?)
    • local storage keeps track of what current user has seen so you can always see something new
  • toggle for toggling on/off the very interactive, crazy displays / art / dynamic interaction
  • #ideas leave metadata about the photo / day in metadata text
    • ex: “based on photo of a XX at YY time in ZZ place, taken on AA with BB”
    • can gracefully fall back based on missing data
    • how can i tie this in with vignettes? How can it actually show something about my life and then be something that I can share out?
      • How can I change this into a general app that people can use? sort of like yo but the core purpose of the app is to share something intimate and tiny. The vibe is very much sending letter off in bottle
        • same thing with smile exchange except this one is more personal about sharing what you are thinking about / up to
        • dispo-like vibe of filter but it should also accept text
  • can you “snapshot” your favorite ones and then get that as an image. but also its kind of an NFT?
    • ask jonah to send me thing his friend does on generative art from eth metadata
    • save favorite combinations, or just let them be ethereal and temporary, part of the beauty
  • allow people to travel through time and see how the website / i was like in the past? (can filter everything by date :O)

Tasks

  • name this project either view master or based on Kaleidoscope

  • Experiment with this on your personal website.
    • possible data source:
      • I can use my photo-a-day album as a starting point for distilling the core colors to feature and incorporate that into a specific section of my site?
      • the day + clarity rating from my live-monitor
    • Can feel like an immersive experience where you “enter the view-master” and then you can see a live peek. It does need to be flowy and always changing — somehow should be like a Kaleidoscope in that way.
    • integrate this into your favicon
