A spark was lit in the castle’s dungeon. It came out with the moon. It laid an egg and inside I found my hollow heart. I felt it beat inside me. A steady rhythm one-two. I watched it bleed. Scarlet streaks, oozing beauty, like streams of sunlight in the sky. A rock by the river. Too far up the shore to ever taste water. Watching its brethren bathe, dip their toes, drown in screaming bubbles. In a breath, as quickly as it was lit, as if it was a trick of the eye, the dark returns.
