Sitting in haircut thinking about how there’s this increase in chasing self reliance and independence but money gives us an excuse to go interact with people in the wild. It’s like a shortcut to getting interaction because otherwise you have to barter which Is a lot of mental overhead. Funny that something commercial and inhuman lis the entry point to something so human

  • I could cut my hair myself but I pay for the convenience and i also pay for the opportunity to go out and interact in the world. self-reliance is efficient but it’s a lonely way to live.
  • money somehow has turned every transaction into an opportunity for intimacy. Perhaps before we were already intimate with our entire community in the barter world. If we were to be independent for everything, we’d miss out on so many opportunities to interface with people in different points of life. Especially now in our increasingly lonely and siloed world, where we spend anywhere from a quarter to a half of our lives in front of a screen alone or connected through digital thread, these interactions are the last stalwart of physical interaction outside of the core group we find.
  • Naturally because these interactions are centered around a commercial purpose, it’s easy for them to become purely transactional, mecahnical routines. But if we consider these experiences without the bias of a capitalist lens, we find that they are nucleation sites for intimacy. Every person you encounter through a very commercial and inhuman transaction like this is someone that you could grow from or share in.
