Vision 1-pager

There is a universal yearning for livable cities, the kind that has open, public spaces for children to freely play, explore, and wander safely. People have resorted to creating entirely new cities, separate from the ones we’ve already made in order to realize this dream. But if we look closer at the places we live, we find that there is already infrastructure (both public and private) that aims to fill these desires. Libraries, museums, public galleries, playgrounds, neighborhood businesses and community spaces all provide space for exploration

people’s thoughts jacky zhao

  • we have talked a lot
  • would be really nice to have a physical space for sharing the internet stuff that we do that is not just for use but also for play
  • recurse center vibes
  • azlen lots of possibilities open up when you have a physical space including experiments
    • so many ideas that came up when talking about a physical space
    • “lab within a lab”: if you have a big open space you can build rooms within it and have those be customizable — you can project onto a wall from behind it
      • entire lab is panopticon: go into a space and ask a question and get snippets back that are relevant
        • panoptimism
        • game tape — record work session and play it back Yx fast
        • time travel room spencer’s goals
  1. formalism + having a gathering place / schelling point for people to think about this
  2. having the physical space
    • both to make things that combine this modality and
    • connect it to community and situate it in the space, have a public part with interactive pieces

jacky: technology is deeply beautiful

  • mostly want a place to hang with people who are exploring these things and gather
    • we are all working on adjacently related things
    • parallel play and being able to share together work-in-progress

matthew siu: we aren’t composing our work yet — it would be really nice

  • pair program together
  • in this time and age, the narrative around what computing where aspects of it are very dark (this AI stuff, we’re going down, etc.). would be very nice to have a space to plant a seed for a different vision
    • share publicly on internet but also have a space to visit in-person
    • leave with realm of possibilities for them expanded

azlen: working towards some sort of foundation to make it easy to build on each others work

  • with dynamicland, they had the language and infrastructure set up such that anyone who came into the space, could build something and it would be reused and modular for them to come back to
    • the fact that they can come back and the thing is still
  • community kitchen style of using it
    • “the shelf”: maybe you just have a lot of small projects that bubble up and you might work on something for a day and then put it on the shelf
      • and anytime someone can take it down and tinker with it
      • exquisite corpse artifacts
      • all having complete agency on it while they’re working on it
      • invitation for visitors to contribute in a healthy way

azlen and matthew siu tried to do it already but “failed” so would be important to align first on the vision and story

  • what are three verbs that you wish would be associated with computing:
  • prior group:
    • everyone had overlapping interests but ???
    • physical - all flew to Columbia and stayed there for a couple months
      • some cool things that came from it but not from the group as a whole
      • matthew tweeted a couple things
      • matthew siu: problem was too much pressure upfront until the group has gotten enough time to know each other and see where they fit
        • prior one came together because 1) covid 2) before even met, seems something interesting to make together, some expectations to start a company.
  • prompt GPT for what writing is inspired by
    • metaphor.systems for getting exact links that are related
    • azlen two words in juxtaposition that feel like they really capture that idea well, search pairs of those
      • subversive way to search
    • folk search methods
  • tentatively physical space in july “popup”
    • garden in the space
