* In interaction and digital product design, clarity and functionality are crucial. When you write code, it has to be logical and computer-readable to run. If you describe something, whether to an end user or a teammate, you generally aim to be as straightforward as possible.
* Lately, I’ve been challenging myself to do the opposite of this, especially in my writing. 

* At some point, I realized that there was a never-ending abyss of ways to be helpful, and that if all I did was respond to them, it left me no time for my own creative output. Being constantly useful in a million small ways was an escape from confronting deep-seated fears around finding my artistic voice. 
* I set a new goal at the start of this year: at least once a week, I’d allow myself to act upon a creative urge at the time I felt it, regardless of how inconvenient the timing might be. 
* I’ve always harbored the semi-conscious idea that focusing on my own creative expression was selfish. I’ve also been terrified of being so exposed.
* What I learned instead was that by connecting to myself and finding a way to arrange the jumble of thoughts and emotions inside me, I’d helped people with theirs.
