Gemini is a new protocol for browsing the internet founded by solderpunk. it’s designed only to serve data, and intends to foster a friendlier internet — one in which arbitrary information can’t be passed from consumer to producer no matter what the motivation.

All that experience can be had on the Web as well. Gemini is not a replacement for the Web. It is just another option in your toolbox. The Web is your orchestral music, Gemini is low-fi chiptune. You can enjoy both. There is a ton of joy in working with simple tools that are easy to understand.

You may think of Gemini as “the web, stripped right back to its essence” or as “Gopher, souped up and modernised just a little”, depending upon your perspective (the latter view is probably more accurate). Gemini may be of interest to people who are:

  • “smol web”
  • text-only mostly
  • single document, single request (no scripting)
  • has its own markdown language (simplified markdown)
